07042015 – Applecross and Ullapool

After two nights in our luxurious loft room in Ose it was time to move on as we had two nights booked in Ullapool, about 3.5 hours north and back on the mainland. After another fortifying breakfast cooked by Kenny, Karen packed the gear bags and I loaded up the bike ready for the day’s ride.

Originally we’d planned to travel to the northernmost tip of the Isle of Skye on our way out as that would of taken us past the ‘Old Men of Storr’ – a stone outcrop used in the opening scenes of Prometheus (for all you Alien fans), but Karen wasn’t feeling too flash so we turned south instead and made for a quick exit off Skye.

A few days earlier we’d been chatting with a few riders waiting for the ferry at Maillag to take their bikes across to Skye, and they were all planning to tackle the mountain pass to Applecross, just north of Kyle of Lochalsh. Top Gear have rated this mountain pass road as one of the best drives in Britain, and warning signs at the start advise against learner riders, caravans, or winter crossings. The pass is single lane only, very twisty, about 20km in length, and has passing bays every 50m – 150m to allow traffic to pass. In places the gradient is 20% – and the final few turns of the twisty track are very tight and steep, and were wrapped in fog as we rode up to the snow line.

We stopped for a brief photo opportunity in the snow at the top of the pass, the bike shrouded in fog as we walked across the small carpark to a memorial plaque, and for a brief moment the fog lifted revealing blue skies and allowing us to see all the way down to the coast and across to Skye, before it closed in again. Karen was keen to play in the snow for a while, and took good aim at me with a couple of snowballs, but it wasn’t long before she started to feel the cold. We remounted the bike and rode down the single track to the tiny coastal village of Applecross, and popped into the even tinier Applecross Inn for a warming lunch of garlic mushrooms for Karen, and green Thai chicken curry for myself.

We left Applecross bound for Ullapool via the “coward’s way” – the northern coastal road that was only slightly wider than the mountain pass and certainly not as steep, but still very scenic and a pleasure to ride. We passed a lot of sheep in the fields with many lazing right next to the road, and some wooly highland cows.

The road twisted and weaved around the shores of a loch, rising and falling like the waves. The scenery was spectacular with snow covered peaks visible in the distance. Rejoining a more major road we stepped up the pace a bit and were making good time enroute for Ullapool when, 20km short of our destination, Karen was feeling so ill from her treatment that she needed to pull off and have a break for a few minutes. We’d stopped near a shallow stream flowing through the fields so I took a few quick photos whilst Karen gathered herself for the last push into Ullapool. The GPS directed us right to the front door of Creagan’s Guest House, and Harris the collie came and supervised me as I parked the bike down the driveway, a pebble strewn challenge to finish the day with.

Karen introduced herself to our hostess Kathleen, and upon mentioning that she was feeling ill Kathleen made an appointment at the local doctors for Karen, and we walked around the corner to see him, before racing down to the pharmacy on the high street to get some scripts filled before they closed for the day.

Dinner that evening for me was four shortbread fingers, liberally covered in Nutella, which I’d found on the Isle of Skye, and we were in bed by 7:30pm. Some exhilarating riding today, quite challenging across the mountain pass but also very rewarding, but the enjoyment of the riding was offset by the knowledge that Karen was in extreme discomfort from her treatment.

20th Jan – crating the bike.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OMG…..It’s really happening…. Vince took the day off work to sort out the bike at Auto Classic BMW – where Aaron had arranged for young Shane to assist us – at a price of course ($268). Karen was at work until the early afternoon and drove the panniers and soft bags in the car. It was not without a little drama … at around 11.00am Vince discovered the the Registration paper engine number didn’t match the purchase paper numbers – a 4 was missing from the front! DISASTER! The bike needed to be inspected by MVR and new papers issued. Team work with Karen organising the booking of the inspection and Vince going out of his way to get it done all worked out!
Our baby all ready to be boxed up, we were able to fit both panniers (filled), both soft bags (filled) and Vince’ motocross boots. We were hoping to also include the top box but that was pushing it! The front wheel had to come off and next would be removal of the windscreen and mirrors and then lowering of the handlebars! Our baby was ravaged!  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  Vince’s workmate, Glenda, gave us a blue ribbon to send off our bike with! So here is Karen doing her best game show hostess moves!  Glenda will also be looking after our other baby – Cebar (after a Honda CBR 1000) for the 12 months we are gone …. but that’s a different story!
We set off from BMW and Vince remembered in all the confusion that he forgot to take of the old number plate from the bike – we needed it to exchange for our personalised plate (2UP ADV) when it came. A frantic phone call to Aaron and we were too late – the bike was sealed….but a bit of sweet talking and he agreed to open it up again and sort it. Karen called past on her way to work the next morning to pick up the plate and drop off  a small thank you for both Aaron and Shane – they were impressed!  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA  It also gave her the opportunity to say a final good by to the ANIMAL and have a picture taken with the crate ….. see you in the UK baby!

Monday 19th January …Not my most glamorous look, but that’s what happens when your new husband is keen on documenting all aspect of the trip! After lining our panniers and top box with foam to protect the contents, we then had to pack the panniers and soft bags (according to our inventory – yep that’s Vince!). Then we had to bubble wrap them all ready to take to BMW to crate the bike ready for shipment to the UK.

Monday 19th January …. This is the way we wash the bike, wash the bike, wash the bike, this is the way we wash the bike so early in the evening!  Customs requires the bike to be spotless, both inside and out, so Karen and Vince took to it with toothbrushes – literally! We don’t want anything holding this baby’s travels up at either leaving Australia or arriving in the UK. Good as brand spanking new!

Vince attended the Inaugural Perth HU Travellers Meeting held in October 2013 – where he met the founders Grant and Susan Johnson …HU and the DVD series “The Achievable Dream” were inspirational and when Vince met Karen in 2014 it was one of the first experiences he shared with her. It was almost an indoctrination into a cult for her…..and she was hooked. She became a member in her own right after the South Africa trip.  P1110112
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA By the time the October 2014 HU Travellers Meeting (held at Fairbridge, W.A.) came around they were both hungry for more….. it was a great weekend with Karen doing her thing taking notes on her iPad to help their planning. They attended most sessions together, but sometime would divide and conquer to cover more ground. It was a marvelous experience.

In January 2015 Karen contacted the HU organiser in Germany, Jens Ruprecht, to ask about any language barriers to the couple attending the HU Summer Overland Adventure Travel Event at Campingplatz Pfrimmtal (Pfimmerhof 3, 67729 Sippersfeld) on 14 – 17 May 2015, whilst they are in Europe. Jens extended an invitation to present and after discussion they agreed. So Vince and Karen will now be Australian ambassadors presenting twice: “2upadventures – Aussies Abroad – Dream it…Live it…. Ride it…” about their 12 month Honeymoon so far and also “We come from the Land Downunder! Riding in Australia – the real story!” OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAfter taking delivery of the ANIMAL on 16th May 2014 they did a short trip out to the Pinnacles to help run her in for her first 1000km service. The Pinnacles is a special place for Vince and Karen as it was on a Perth Motorbike and Sidecar Rider’s Camping trip to Cervantes and the Pinnacles on 4th and 5th Jan 2014 that they both knew they were meant to be together…..   IMG_6017IMG_6028IMG_6004

Upon returning from the South Africa ride Karen and Vince were so impressed with the BMW 1200 GS that the looked at purchasing one for their big trip. At Auto Classic in Perth, Karen fell in love with the GSA fully kitted out with metal panniers and top box – she even had the colour picked out -Olive! It was a step up from the 1200 GS they had ridden, and as the latest water cooled model, one of the most expensive options available ($29,000 plus $3000 for panniers, top box GPS) -but you only live once and the heart wants what the heart wants! Karen’s philosophy was may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb!  2014_BMW_R_1200_GS_1139225
TRIUMPHTiger1200Explorer2014UrbanTouringMotorcycle Karen was already set, but Vince, being Vince, wanted to explore all options…He took Karen to view the  Triumph 1200 Explorer ($22,790) at JCS Motorcycles in Burswood. Karen took a look but was unmoved.
Vince then took Karen to view the KTM 1190R Adventure ($20,000) at Savage Suzuki in Midland. Again, Karen took a look but was unmoved.  2013-ktm-1190-adventure-and-adventure-r-officially-priced_2
BMWR1200GSAdventure2014EquippedAllroadTouringEnduro The ANIMAL! Vince couldn’t change Karen’s mind to go for a cheaper option, and had to admit in his heart of hearts he also wanted the BMW R1200 GS Adventure they had initially picked out! So the decision was made – get out that credit card!
We took delivery on 16th May 2014 but had to wait a little longer for the right pannier and top box that were on back order. Vince made further modifications on the bike such as an endure bashplate, and later thing such as bark buster hand guards, headlight protector, lowered the seat etc which you can check out under the bike tab!  Karen and Vince buy a Bike
The South Africa Big 5 Oh Trip was organised by Kevin (Gobby) and expat, as a reunion ride for the Laos Beer Drinking Team. Karen was a late ring in and approved for inclusion as their ‘medic” due to her nursing and ambulance officer background. This pic was taken on our fist night in Cape Town at Signal Hill with Table Mountain in the background –  AFRICA NOT FOR SISSY’S!  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
P1130273  Our rented BMW 1200 GS from Cape Bike rentals was a pleasure to ride on – even though on the very first day Vince managed to loose the Airhawk we brought from Australia – in all honesty it wasn’t required!
Cape of Good Hope – this was our shake down ride from Cape Town for the day to get used to the bike and the road conditions. It was blustery but fine whilst we were there and we enjoyed a lovely meal at a nearby restaurant.  P1130280
IMG_0017 One of the highlights of our trip was when we ere in Outshoorn – we got up before dawn to experience a wild Meerkat encounter – absolutely unique! In the colony there is a hierarchy whereby the top Meerkat urinates on all below him –  so you really don’t want to be at the bottom of that pile!
Conquering the Swartzberg Pass was an accomplishment – a steep climb and then decent with no barricades and a sheer drop! Breathtaking! With Vince yelling “Are you livin’ the Dream yet Baby?” in the Sena – Karen could only respond with “Ask me later”as she hung on white knuckled. She did however manage to recover well in the pub at Prince Albert with a double scotch!  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA The Animals in Africa were amazing, both in the wild, Game Parks and Wildlife Parks. We managed to see the BIG 5 – Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard and Rhino. The Cheetah Outreach Centre was an amazing experience -touching and walking with the big cats. But encounters with a baby white tiger and the Lemurs at Outshoorn were exceptional. The Lemurs were so cheeky and had such soft little hands …Karen wanted to take them home!
It’s safe to say that meeting Vince through the Perth Motorbike and Sidecar Riders Meetup Group in early Jan 2014 would change Karen’s life and comfort zones forever! These two kindred souls had immediate connection and Vince shared his travel dreams and ambitions … he had been waiting for Karen all his life – and she for him! Adventure Girl was born in response to finally meeting her Adventure Boy…. “Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

 IMG_3747
600_321211462 At first their “Dream” was just that …a dream for some unknown future date. But being the determined, pragmatic individual she is, Karen was intent on breathing life into it…. Vince met her challenge of showing her  how “the time” and “the money” could be achieved…it was possible! Dreams evolve and although no real plans had been made….they began talking as if it was really going to happen….”when we go how about we take a sidecar for our camping gear ….” , “on our trip how will we……”, “whilst we are away we will …” Slowly, without really realising it, things were becoming crystallised into reality. Failure was never an option.
The South Africa Trip was already planned for March 2014 and Vince, with permission for the Laos Beer Drinking Team, invited Karen to join them as their medic ……but really it was to test the waters in terms of the couple travelling overseas on a motorbike – which Karen had never done. Riding pillion on the back of their hired BMW 1200 GS was fantastic! She took to it like a duck to water, and this Moet drinking, Business Class Jetsetter was converted! Bring in on! By the time they got back to Perth she already had her heart set on a BMW as the vehicle of choice for their big overseas ride.  IMG_3753
IMG_3755 Their “Dream” was no longer fictional, they were “Living It” – breathing life into it on a daily basis, planning and refining bit by bit. There now was no question of going…. there was only when…..
